Festival du Kivu 7th Edition:

The Power of Art in Times of Conflict

In the hills of Kivu, where the lakes reflect the beauty of a land that has been wounded, the Festival du Kivu returns for its seventh edition under the theme “Restorative Art.” This festival is much more than a cultural event; it has become a space of resilience, memory, and reconstruction for a people who have endured years of conflict and violence.

The artists participating in the festival have often themselves experienced war, poverty, and trauma, yet on stage, they transform these wounds into creative gestures, words, sounds, and movements that serve as bridges between communities and rays of hope. The festival supports artistic creativity by providing local artists with opportunities for exposure, workshops, and creative labs that allow them to develop their skills, exchange with peers, and showcase their talent beyond borders.

This year, the festival plans to host around 80 artists from the Great Lakes region and present more than 15 performances during the first phase, which will take place from October 16 to 18 in Bukavu and Goma, before continuing from October 24 to 26 in Beni.

Beyond the stage, the festival acts as a tool for collective healing. Dance, theater, music, and storytelling provide participants and audiences with spaces where the memory of violence can be transformed into creativity and positive energy. The artists themselves become healers of their trauma, agents of change, and builders of hope, demonstrating the profound capacity of art to restore lives and strengthen the resilience of society.

Through their creations, they advocate for peace, democracy, and freedom of expression, making each performance an act of social transformation. They remind us that art is not only a means of personal expression but also a powerful force for change in a region where the scars of war are still present.

The Festival du Kivu shows that culture can unite, educate, and inspire, and that local artists, by sharing their stories and talents, become catalysts for social cohesion. Each performance is a message of resistance and hope, each workshop a space of transmission and collective building, and each encounter a moment where art transcends divisions to create a more harmonious future.

By bringing these artists together, the festival transforms pain into beauty, fear into creative energy, and wounds into projects full of life and peace, embodying the strength and central role of the arts in the reconstruction and reconciliation of Kivu.
